November 1999 The World of Copland Icon Collection: Volume 5 Introduction: Once again we visit the "World of Copland" with our 5th volume in the collection. What makes this set of over 60 freeware icons so special this time around? Well, a few months ago we asked our visitors for ideas about what they'd like to see in the next WOC installment. We received a ton of email on the subject, and about 75% of the icons contained in this set are based directly on suggestions from our fans. In addition, we've tried to focus more on every day objects instead of going the total "techno-geek" route. We hope you enjoy this latest offering into the 3D realm of Copland, and thanks to everyone who took the time to write with suggestions, even if your idea didn't make it into the final set. The enclosed folder contains 63 icons based on the now infamous and defunct Mac OS code named Copland. Probably the most memorable thing about Copland was the distinctive 3D look of the interface's icons. World of Copland:5 continues the trend of the latest and greatest Macintosh hardware, every day objects, removable media and fun stuff. We've also included the 5 icons we created for the 1998 edition of IconPlanet's IconJam festival. The WOC series has become like an old friend to us here at the Iconfactory. We hope you'll enjoy your visit and put these cool, freeware icons to good use. Legality: The enclosed icons are ©1999 The Iconfactory. The icons are original artwork from the author and may only be used for personal, non- commercial applications. These icons can only be distributed as freeware. If you choose to redistribute WOC: 5, you may not charge fees or request compensation OF ANY KIND and the read-me file must accompany the file at all times. Important Notes About Copying & Pasting 8.5 Icons In Mac OS 8.5, there are two types of custom icons you can use: old-style with only 256 colors and the new style with 32-bit icons. The Finder only copies and pastes the new style. This is a more efficient use of disk space. However, if you paste the Mac OS 8.5 icon on removable media, such as a floppy or Zip disk, the icon won't show up when you move to an older version of the OS. You'll also have problems on a network server and an older client Mac. By default, the Iconfactory's IconDropper 3.2 utility pastes both kinds of icons so they will show up on any version of the OS that supports custom icons. To learn more about IconDropper 3.2, please visit the Iconfactory at Thanks! How To make Use of Icons: The most common use of custom icons is as a replacement for the standard file and folder icons that are built into your Mac's operating system. Many people find that it is much easier to find a file that you are looking for by spotting a cool, colorful icon rather than by its name. Icons can be cut and pasted onto almost any item on the Macintosh. For the most part however, they are just a whole lot of fun. As for how to apply them, here is the most straight forward way: 1. On your desktop, select the icon you would like to use 2. Select "Get Info" (command-I) from the File Menu for that icon 3. Click on the icon in the upper left of the window 4. Choose "Copy" (command-C) from the Edit menu 5. Close the window 6. Select the file/folder you want to apply that icon to 7. Select "Get Info" (File menu) for that icon 8. Click on the icon in the upper left of the window 9. Select "Paste" (command-V) from the Edit Menu. (this method won't work on the trash can) 10. You're done!
